Matinecock Housing Information
A three-decade long fight to build the Matinecock Court affordable housing development in East Northport could be ending as a sewage treatment plant variance request comes before the Suffolk County Department of Health.
The Huntington Town Planning Board approved the 155-unit, half-rental, half-ownership site plan on 15 acres at Pulaski and Elwood Roads in January 2010 after years ofdelays and community opposition. Now, the developers seek Suffolk County's approval for an on-site sewage treatment plant, a process which could take months as the review board compiles written testimony from the public.
Developers will need a county variance for the location of the treatment facility because of its proximity to surrounding structures such as the railroad track, a LIPA substation, and the proposed housing development itself. Opponents also cite the plant's proximity to Pulaski Road Elementary School and Northport High School as points of concern.
The variance hearing for the Matinecock Court sewer treatment plant was held on November 17, 2011 at the Department of Public Health Services in Yaphank. Letters were accepted by the Department of Health Services until November 28 for anyone interested in making lengthy comments or who was unable to attend the meeting.

People First (1115) Waiver New York State is about to implement the most sweeping change to the way in which it provides services for the developmentally disabled since the closing of Willowbrook in the 1980s. This will be done through the People First (1115) Waiver and will affect every individual receiving adult services in New York State. The NYS Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) has established Waiver Discussion Boards as a means to further dialogue on the reforms within the People First Waiver. I have been selected as one of 30 individuals to sit on the Long Island People First Waiver Discussion Board. Those of us on the Board have been encouraged to share the information we receive with individuals and families who receive OPWDD services. We have been asked to report back comments and suggestions from those not on the waiver discussion board. I have a blog on my website (www.craigmarcott.com) which will enable you to read my updates regarding the Discussion Board meetings. It will also allow you to view questions, comments and suggestions posted by other individuals and to add comments and questions of your own.
